Welcome, welcome, welcome everybody to Top Line Live at Five. My name is Brian Devine here with Top Line. And today, let’s talks about something that seems really mundane but it’s really important and that is Google analytics. Now, the reason that this is kind of come up for me lately is that when we start working with clients that have really nice websites, we don’t recommend that we create a new one or find somebody else to pray, if your site’s great, let’s work with it. Usually, there are certain things that we’re just going to want to make sure we have and more often than not those things are sort of built into the sites because that’s just common steady practice for building websites. And one of those things is adding a Google analytics account. What Google analytics does is it tracks almost everything that your visitors do on your website so that you can get really good insight as to what’s working, what’s not working, how many people are coming, how long they’re staying.
Are they leaving your site too fast? Are they going to internal pages? All this really great information and we’re finding that these sort of. The big website companies out there are not installing Google analytics and it’s kind of frustrating because we need to show that what we’re doing is working and one of the easiest ways to do this and say,” You started out with 200 people come to your website and now there’s $400, right?”. And we want to be able to track that because if we’re still at $200, then we know what we’re doing isn’t enough and we need to fix those things. So, and that’s just an example. I mean that’s just one of the few things. We also want to make sure that we don’t have what’s called a bounce rate problem. That means that somebody is coming to your website and taken a quick look and with a very short amount of time, they’re gone.
They just leave. So they don’t click on an internal page. They don’t spend enough time scanning and reading. They don’t watch a video just, they do pretty much nothing. And that’s considered a bounce. Google doesn’t like bounces because it tells them that the person who found your website didn’t get what they wanted, so they went back to the searches and that’s not what Google wants. Google wants their search, their searches to produce exactly what people want. Now, I want to make sure that you knew how to figure out if you have Google analytics on your website and there are all kinds of different tools and ways. But I thought, why don’t we just do one of the fastest and easiest things possible and I’m going to show you exactly how to do it on your website. And you can kind of follow along.
But, this is just our website here. And all you want to do is you want to find just some blank spot, like you don’t want to click on text or anything like that. So we just want to find some blank space, right click. Then you click the view page source. Now, if you’re on a different browser, might say something else, but what you’re looking for is source code, page, source, source code, something along those lines. Now I’m using chrome, so if you’re using Firefox or safari or something along those lines, you might see somebody different, but essentially source code is what you want. Okay? So you on that and it open up a whole bunch of texts that you’re going to think. I do not know what any of this stuff is.
Why is Brian asked me to do this? Because it’s really simple. What’s you’re going to do is I like to use control F for find and I’m chrome is going to drop this right up on top. If you’re on safari, it’s probably going to be an excuse me. Firefox will probably be on the bottom, but you’re going to have this little box here and what I do is I just type in UAE and that it. That is a very quick little code that will tell you if Google universal analytics code is on your site. So if what we do is we click on this little drop down and we see it says right here because of the x. You are compatible. Okay, that’s not what I’m looking for.
This is my universal analytics code and it basically is telling Google that I want them to track what’s happening on the website and it’s really that easy. So you can see that it just took me like a half a second here. I mean it’s so fast and easy to find this and I’d like to do it this way because then I can visually see because there’s some tools that sometimes they’ll look for us, sometimes they’ll look for something else and sometimes they miss it. But you’ll see right here, right around that, us as Google analytics.com. Then you know that you’ve got it on there. And the reason that I am bringing this up again is just because it is such a fantastic tool to get great information. It is absolutely free from Google.
Now, years ago we stopped using analytics and we started using our own tool. I think it was called p Wiki or something crazy like that because we were thinking we’re kind of gaming the system a little bit. We’re doing everything we can to get our clients to show up on the first page of Google. We don’t want to signal everything we’re doing to Google. Well, we found out that it doesn’t really matter if we’re not giving Google full access because they pretty much attracting everything anyway because of where the browsers and browser history. Even if they’re not tracking your site, they’re tracking browsers. So to think that you’re somehow going to pull one over on them is just not the case anymore. You have no chance of doing that. So don’t worry about it. Throw the Google analytics on there. It’s free, it’s a great tool. They keep updating it and they keep making it better.
So why not take advantage of it and then that way you can kind of go in and see. These are the things that I’m doing working you can, you can track how people go through your site, there’s all kinds of really great stuff. So let me know what questions you have. If it is, you’re in great shape and then talk to your website provider and say, how do I get access to my Google analytics account because I’d like to see what’s going on and if it is not on there, getting in touch with whoever built your website and say, “Let’s get some Google analytics on there so we can start tracking everything. “
