Search Engine Optimization (SEO)Yup, It Still Works...
Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short is everything you can do in order to get your site to show up on page one of Google, Bing, and Yahoo!. Google is still the 800 pound gorilla so most of what we talk about and work in focused on Google.
There are two types of SEO that you need to be aware of. On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO. The reason you need to know about both is so you can make an educated decision when choosing a company to help you get to the top of search results for your targeted keywords. If you are not sure what keywords are, they are the words people put into Google when they are looking for information about a specific topic. The reason you want to understand both types is so you know if you are getting one or the other, or preferably both.
On-Page SEO is everything you can do on your website itself to help Google see it as the authority website for your targeted keywords and push it to the top of search results. What can you do to the website you ask?
There is surprising quite a bit including the structure of the site and how search engines like Google read the site. You can also optimize the links within the site to help let Google know what each page is about. Videos on your site can help with your SEO by increasing the time people spend on your site. Yes, Google tracks how much time people spend on your site, how many pages they visit, and if they land on your home page and leave within 10 seconds it can really hurt your rankings in the search results. You can even include what is called Schema Markup (special computer code) to further demonstrate to Google what your site is about, where you are located and they you are the authority in your field.
What can be done with On-Page SEO can get a bit technical but if you are working on improving your site yourself, the main things for you to spend time optimizing are your title tags (get your keywords in here!), meta description (get more keywords in here!), meta keywords (don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t need em), and adding great content on every page. With those pieces in place, you can really improve your rankings.
As for Off-Page SEO, things can get a little crazy. You can do things like create social signals by getting links from social media sites back to your website. You can use Private Blog Networks and Press Releases to build high value, high authority links to your website. Basically anything and everything you can do to get Google to see your website and the authority site in your area is Off-Page SEO.
Lots of people will tell you that creating links to boost your search engine results is “black hat.” Meaning against Google’s terms of service and could get you penalized, placing you on page 10 of searches for 6 months or longer. Here is the truth…anything and everything you do to manipulate your search results is against Google’s terms of service. You just want to keep things looking as “natural” as possible with everything you do. Google understand that SEO is a game we all play and they are in control of every aspect so we play by the basics of their rules while doing everything in our power to do exactly what they don’t want…to manipulate the search results.
